OUTDOOR PROJECTS

“It's free. It's fantastic. And it is so Vancouver.”
– Colin Thomas, The Georgia Straight

Born from a long-standing tradition of outdoor performance in physical theatre, our own artistic inspirations and a desire to reach out beyond the sometime exclusive walls of the theatre, Boca del Lupo’s outdoor spectaculars have exploded in a way we never could have imagined.

In the summer of 2001, Boca del Lupo set down a path to create a free, outdoor, all-ages, roving spectacular that would become a destination production for locals and travelers to BC alike, a show that would bridge the gap between young and old, theatregoers and non-theatregoers, and work to bring together the many diverse performing communities and disciplines present in our city. The first production took the form of a Fringe Festival offering entitled Inside that took place in and around a large Plexiglas cube situated on a grassy knoll, surrounded by trees and encircled on three sides by water.

In 2002, in partnership with the Vancouver Parks Board, The Only Animal, and with the support of The Vancouver Playhouse and countless volunteers we created The Last Stand. This production succeeded on many levels; “selling out” on the second day of performance, drawing audience from far beyond the reaches of Vancouver’s city limits, featuring a mixture of daredevil and beautiful performances set high in the canopy of Stanley Park and an insightful story that kept both the young and the old engaged throughout.

Our 2005 production of Vasily the Luckless won the Critics Choice Award and Outstanding Production at Vancouver’s Jesse Richardson Theatre Awards and our adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Notre Dame de Paris featured partnerships with Vancouver Opera, The Squamish Nation and was a highlighted as part of the Canada Council for the Arts 50th Anniversary celebrations.

This long standing tradition of extraordinary outdoor performances and installations continues to be an inspirational avenue for Boca del Lupo.
